Dry Needling

Dry needling is a treatment method commonly used in physiotherapy and chiropractic to relieve pain.  Dry needling is not acupuncture.  It is based on a modern scientific study of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems, where the needle is inserted directly into a motor point or trigger point to elicit a contraction and subsequent relaxation of the affected tissue.  It has a similarity of “ashi point” in TCM where we find the painful location through performing the palpation.

Dry needling can be a little uncomfortable.  Some patients may still experience a “twitch response” with the insertion of the needle. This is comparable to a quick muscle cramp or ache. The 24-48 hours following a dry needling treatment may also result in muscle soreness, which should go away on its own.

Sore muscles can be treated at home through gentle movements and drinking plenty of fluids.  Take a couple of hot/warm Epsom salt baths will be most beneficial.
